2018 Take Your Child To Work Day

April 30, 2018

The Willingboro Fire Department once again took part in "Take Your Child To Work Day". First begun in 1993 by the Foundation for Women as "Take Our Daughters to Work Day", the annual program has since also included sons on the special day traditionally held on the fourth Thursday in April. Today, almost 40 million employees participate in Take Your Child to Work Day festivities in US companies coast to coast.

Eight children participated in the day with the firefighters. They started their day with a shift briefing, just as all of the department's firefighters do each day. Chief of Department Burnett and Deputy Chief Clark took some time to meet with the kids in the morning. Throughout the rest of the day, the kids participated in many of the daily events in the firehouse such as cleaning of the station and apparatus, and checking the readiness of the apparatus and equipment.

Training was another aspect of the day. The kids learned how to use fire hoses, and how firefighters operate the Jaws of Life and air bags, which can lift heavy objects such as cars. The day ended with the kids doing a small firefighter obstacle course, and sitting in several of the department's apparatus.
